Founded in 1895 as Peiyang University, Tianjin University is the oldest institute of higher education in China, and pioneered the development of modern Chinese education.
Founded as Peiyang University in 1895, Tianjin University (TJU) is one of the earliest Chinese universities that started graduate education, as well as the alma mater of the first batch of overseas students supported by the Chinese government. In 1934, during the Peiyang University period, TJU begun to accept graduate students. In 1984, TJU became one of the first twenty two institutes elected by the State Council to run graduate schools. Over the past thirty years, more than 60,000 high-level talents have been educated here. They have made indelible contributions to the establishment of China's modern industrial system and the development of modern economic society.
Graduate education at TJU takes the “service our requirements, improve our quality” as its main goals and focuses on strengthening discipline construction. After years of unremitting efforts, TJU has gradually formed a graduate education system that has more standardized structure and scale, more distinct features and guaranteed quality. Now, TJU has grown into an important institute for fostering graduate students in China.
Currently, TJU has twenty seven doctoral degree programs with first-level disciplines, thirty five master degree programs with first-level disciplines, seventeen professional master degree programs and engineering doctoral degree programs. The university has established a high-quality postgraduate supervisor team with a standardised structure and energy. The tutors, with an average age of forty six, possess noble virtue and significant academic achievements. Fifteen percent of them are leading academics, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of engineering. The school has a current enrollment of over 20,000 graduate students, including more than 3,000 doctoral students.
To pursue the goal of developing a world-class university and assisting national strategy, TJU has actively yet steadily implemented a variety of measures, promoting the comprehensive reform of postgraduate education and striving to nurture more top-level talents with strong abilities in both innovation and practice for the nation’s benefit.
1. Discipline Structure
Up to now, Tianjin University has formed a balanced structure of disciplines with an emphasis on engineering, combined with sciences and integrated with economics, management, humanities, law, and education. For years, TJU has been improving the structure of disciplines, under the guidance of the principle “effort should be put in the important; priorities should be clearly defined and paid due attention.” The new School of Computer Software is established after incorporating the Department of Visual Arts from the School of Film and TV, aiming to foster multi-talented persons.The newly-built College of Management and Economics has laid solid foundation for the upgrade of the related majors.We have also established School of Life Sciences and readjusted Agronomy. Tianjin University now has 27 Doctoral Degree Programs (Level I Disciplines) and 8 Master Degree Programs (Level I Disciplines) , 7 Level I National Key Disciplines (with 21 Level II Disciplines). Besides, there are 8 Level II National Key Disciplines and 2 Level II National Key Disciplines (Under Cultivation). Also there are 27 Tianjin key disciplines.

2. Degree Granting
In 1981, Tianjin University was, among the first institutions, authorized by the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council to grant master’s degree and doctor’s degree. In the same year, Tianjin University started to employ degree system and established the Academic Degree Evaluation Committee of Tianjin University, setting up an executive Office in charge of degree granting evaluation.
In order to optimize the degree management procedures and improve work efficiency, Tianjin university develops a system to achieve comprehensive automation of degree granting management. From 2011, procedures can be carried out online, including the application and granting of degrees, evaluation of excellent doctor fund granting and review of outstanding dissertation. In 2011, Tianjin University set up the academic dissertation supervision system and invited professors, rigorous and accomplished in academic research, to be committee members of the master’s thesis supervision group to supervise and ensure the quality of the master’s thesis papers and oral defense and to verify the confidentiality of the papers. 3. Graduate Curriculum
Tianjin University implements the education policy set by the Chinese Communist Party, adheres to the principle of developing the country via better education, embraces the campus culture of rigorous study, upholds the tradition of patriotic dedication and defines cultivation of ethics as the basic task of postgraduate education. Now, there are about 14,000 registered full-time postgraduate students, including about 3,000 doctoral students, around 10,000 master students as well as 5,000 part-time graduate students.
Tianjin University has long attached utmost importance to postgraduate education, starting from Peiyang time. Tianjin university took the lead in the introduction of education model adopted by European and American key universities. The first batch of Peiyang graduates was qualified to go directly to the graduate schools of Harvard University, Yale University and other famous universities for further study. In 1934, the Engineering Research Institute, National Peiyang Engineering College was established and issued the earliest postgraduate admissions and degree granting regulations. After the postgraduate students recruitment returned to normal in 1979, Tianjin University in 1984 became one of the first 22 universities to establish graduate schools. In 1997, Tianjin University became one of the first national key universities under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education to recruit part-time students for the Master of Engineering After that, Tianjin University, also among the first, started to recruit students for degrees of Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), and Master of Landscape Architecture. 4. Team of Supervisors
Following the policies of improving the quality while increasing the quantity of the supervisory teams, Tianjin University (TJU) has built up a high academic standard, and an inspiring research environment in a large number of academic disciplines. When TJU resumed its graduate admission in 1978, there were only sixty-seven supervisors for the master’s and Ph. D. students. Today the number has soared to 1909 close to two thousand.

5. Internationalization in Education
In 2014, the 3rd Postgraduate Education Conference of Tianjin University stressed the importance of developing international competitiveness and put forward the International Competitiveness Enhancement Plan including the establishment of “International Scholarly Exchange Fund” to finance postgraduate joint training program, support students to attend international seminars,provide the fees for visiting programs and other exchange activities. With the funding, the percentage of doctors with overseas academic experience is expected to reach 70% and more.
Since 2008, with the support of the third phase of “211”Innovative Talent Training Project Fund and Jiankun International Student Exchange Fund of Tianjin University, the university strives to develop the internationalization of postgraduate education.

6. Scholarship and Financial Aid
Rewards for publishing high-level academic papers
For SCI papers published before 31st December, 2005, the author was rewarded 1,000 RMB for each journal paper.
For EI papers published before 31st December, 2005, the author was rewarded 500 RMB for each journal paper.
For SCI papers published after 1st January, 2013, the author will be rewarded 1,500 RMB for each journal paper.
Interim Regulations on Postgraduate Financial Aid
The postgraduate financial aid is composed of national financial aid, university aid and research allowance from supervisors.
For each doctoral student, the national financial aid is 12,000 RMB/year, the university aid is 6,000 RMB/year and the research allowance is determined by his/her supervisor according to his/her performance in research.
For each master student, the national financial aid is 6,000 RMB/year and the research allowance is determined by supervisors on the basis of one’s performance in research.
